IRS Tax Help: Get it from the right source

I often have clients in my office who have been through so much trying to get caught up with their taxes and the debt they owe, says Victoria Maxwell of Maxwell Law Firm.

The best advice I can give to debtors is as follows:

Once you receive an  tax notice about a debt, immediately contact a licensed tax professional to assist you with getting the matter resolved. There are a lot of tax groups out there that will be promise to help you and take your money and not provide any real assistance. A Tax Attorney or CPA has more expertise in this area and can guide you along the right path as far as clearing up any issues.

I often assist clients with filing returns or amendments. Keep in mind if you do not file a return, IRS will create one for you with any information they have in your tax file. It is best if you file a return, if you are required to do so that your liability or refund amount is correct.

If you owe IRS money, make a deal immediately. IRS reps most of the time would rather work one on one with a on behalf of a taxpayer to resolve tax issues. I have had garnishments releases, offers accepted, and had some tax debts discharged or absolved.

Waiting to the last minute to resolve a could lead to IRS filing a tax lien against you, which means your bank account and paycheck could be . Do not forget that can also report the tax lien to the major credit bureaus and further ruin your credit.

I know you are thinking that you don’t have the money to hire someone to help you with your tax issue, but in this day and age do you have three hours to spend on the phone waiting to speak with an IRS rep? Will you understand all the terminology that they are throwing at you? Ignoring the issue will not make it go away. IRS can collect a debt for up to ten years and sometimes that period is longer, depending on the circumstances. I am a licensed professional who has been dealing with IRS issues for years and I always save my clients money, time, and anguish.
